Review: Applegate Farms Breakfast Sausage

Guys I tried these ages ago and have been meaning to talk about them ever since!  Several months ago the Applegate Farms fairy visited several blogs dropping off chicken goods.  I wasn’t one of those blogs so I bought this box myself.

Chicken breakfast sausage usually makes an appearance here for Sunday Breakfast.  I love it!  In an effort to expand my chicken sausage palate I am constantly looking for new brands of chicken breakfast sausage.

Applegate Farms strives to bring the customer the best possible product using minimal ingredients and high quality ingredients.

They talk about happy chicken although the box does not say that the chicken is cage-free, barn-roaming, or free-range.  No buzz words here.

The ingredient list was simple and not the length of my forearm, so I bought the chicken and sage flavor.  Now this sausage is already cooked so all I had to do was heat it up.  Simple enough.  I am sorry that I don’t have any pictures of the actual sausage for you.  In my haste, I didn’t get a shot.  I realize this is a strike against my food blogger reputation.

The sausage itself looks a little disconcerting.  If you have a cat and have to monitor the litter box then you can probably pick up quickly on what this sausage sort of looks like.

It literally looked like someone took ground chicken and molded it to look like “sausage” by hand.

Sausage, no matter the type, isn’t pretty and since I understand that, I didn’t let looks sway me.  Perhaps it has a nice personality and bangin’ wit.  I heated it up and then tasted it.

The sausage had a very strange texture to it, almost sponge like.  In all honesty, that is exactly what it reminded me of, a sponge.  Even cutting it, it felt spongy.  The taste wasn’t there either.  It wasn’t horrible but it didn’t have enough spice to my liking.  Sage is a classic breakfast sausage herb and I couldn’t taste that at all in this sausage.  Lack of flavor combined with the texture and I couldn’t eat the sausage.

When I have to push sausage away, you know there’s a problem because this chick loves sausage.  Yes that’s actually what I said.

I ended up tossing the remaining sausage and haven’t thought twice about it.  I’ve heard great things about the Applegate Farms products and it’s possible that I would try another product in the future.  I’m not ready to write them off completely just because I didn’t dig on the breakfast sausage.

But this stuff I won’t be eating again.  Ew.

Ew, I hate when that happens. I always want my reviews to be positive. I’m truthful though and won’t say I like it when I don’t but it is disconcerting.

    • Whitney, Al Fresca makes a really great chicken sausage and that’s what we typically eat. You might be able to try that on him! The downside being that they aren’t cheap.

CBers, I haven’t seen other sausages by them! I’ve seen their chicken nuggets and things like that though.

  2. Hmmm, something about “spongelike” that is the most unappetizing food comparison…That is a shame, but if u are willing to give them another shot- their actual chicken sausages are amazing! I tried either the apple flavor, or smoked honey (i forget the name!) and it tasted like a rreaaalll hot dog :D
