December 27th and 28th, 2009: hot action

Hello strangers!  I promise I am not blowing you off but I’ve been trying to hang with mah man as much as possible this break.  Since he’s on vacation, this means he can stay up late and sleep as late as he wants.  This is where we differ completely.  I am a go-to-bed early and wake up early kinda gal.  If I could pull off 9 hour sleeps everyday I totally would but with scheduling (I’m looking at you late-night stick fighting classes!) and timing doesn’t allow for it everyday.

Scott is opposite, dude rolls into bed between four and five AM and sleeps till noon.  Which he can do on vacation.  But this means that the time we actually get to hang and spend together is short, therefore I’ve been trying to make the most of it that I can. :D  I know you dig.

Sunday morning I got up for a most glorious 8 mile run.  HELL YES!  That is my longest run since my half in May, so tossing me some props are most welcome.  It was also a great run, clocking in at 01:15.  For me, for 8 miles, that is awesome sauce.

I decided to have a full out breakfast instead of the usual wee bowl of granola that I normally have after Sunday runs.

Coffee, yogurt with granola Partly because I was hungry and partly because I knew Scott would be sleeping longer and I had no idea when official Sunday breakfast would occur.

Eventually he got up and we chatted for a bit before I got to making us some grub.  As typical, after long runs what I really want to do is stuff my face with some protein.  Gimme!

Eggs, sausage, toast, smoothie, fruit Hello mounds of food!  I love stuffing my pretty face with tons o’ food.  Scrambled eggs and egg whites with some hot sauce of course, Morningstar sausage patties, and a most fabbo Ezek English muffin with butter.  Oranges in the middle and smoothie on the side:

  • 1C Carrot juice
  • 1C Unsweetened cranberry juice
  • 1C Water
  • Kale and spinach (double pow!)
  • 1 Banana
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen peaches
  • Frozen pineapple

I cleared my plate save for one sausage patty and patted my food bellah.

The rest of Sunday is pretty much a blur.  I know we were doing stuff but at this point I don’t really recall what all we did.  But I do remember that we went out to dinner!

For Christmas one of Scott’s clients sent him a very generous giftcard to Bonefish Grill and we decided to use it Sunday evening.  Normally you have to make reservations because it’s always busy but this past Sunday a snow storm was blowing in and I figured we could take our chances at not having reservations.  My assumption was that most people wouldn’t venture out and/or most would still be away on vacation.  Worst case, we would have to sit at the bar to wait for a table.  Oh the horror!

We arrived and got seated right away, the place wasn’t packed at all.  It was actually a really nice, cozy, and romantic atmosphere.  Considering Bonefish is a chain, I was really pleased that it didn’t feel that way when we dined.

Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of our dinner.  The restaurant had some seriously low lighting and all of my pictures were coming out very dark.  Instead of fighting with the camera trying to get everything perfect, I put it away and enjoyed a lovely date night with my hubs.

While I can’t show you pics of my dinner, I can show you some hawt cracker on banana action.

Scott and I Ooo la la!  Our server for the evening took our drink orders and then immediately returned to check our IDs.  She thought we were young and if we were old enough to order drinks, we were probably around 23 at most.  When she read Scott’s ID and then mine, she flipped out.  We are now friends for life.  Love you, server!

Speaking of friends, Olga recently asked her readers who their best friend is (sorry grammar snobs, I realize you are probably cringing now at that sentence).

Scott and I Done.  It’s Scott for the win!  He is the only one who knows the whole me (because he’s the only one I show me to, everyone else gets bits and pieces) and accepts that 100%, no questions asked and loves me unconditionally.

We had a very lovely dinner and I do wish I had something to show you.  Scott had a winter special drink called a Winter Classic or some-such and it was a white cosmo with floating frozen cranberries in it.  It was really pretty and super tasty (although a bit strong, whew!).  I had a shiraz-cab blend.  We started off with some steamed mussels and I also had the house salad.  Very tasty but very small.  I had salmon with spinach on top and veggies on the side.  Scott had mahi topped with crab and lobster.

He also had the most amazing dessert which was a dark chocolate creme brulee.  I know!  I had a few bites and it was fantastic.  Considering I don’t even like creme brulee, that’s saying something. I only had a few bites though because I was saving room for my own dessert.

Wine and cookies Perhaps you think passing up some dark chocolate creme brulee for some vegan spelt chocolate chip cookies is lame, but for me it is anything but.  Part of the enjoyment of dessert for me is also the environment.  Yes we were out to dinner and having a great time but dessert I like to be a little bit more of an intimate experience.  I like being in my jammies, on my couch, with a glass of wine and my boys.  Creme brulee is nice but I don’t know exactly what it is made from and how much of what it has going on.  Plus I’m not in my jammies. And well, that just isn’t right.

Cookies and a glass of wine on my couch will be tops every time. :D

Monday:

Monday was basically non-excitement tied up in a bow. :p  It’s a rest day for me and thank goodness because it was crazy cold and windy yesterday.  Plus I must have been sitting odd at the restaurant because my foot was hurting.  It hurt to walk too!  I realized I must have strained it while eating dinner.  I would love to explain to you how but I don’t know if I could without reenacting it.  I know when I cross my legs, the foot that is on the ground I tend to prop up at an odd angle.  I must have overdone it at dinner.  Whoops!

Oatmeal pot I busted out the new oatmeal pot to make some breakfast.  Interestingly enough I did not make oatmeal.

Coffee and oatbran I made a huge bowl of oatbran.  That pot is a Cuisinart hard anodized 1.5qt pot that also has a lid.  In case you were curious.

Once Scott got up and had been up for a bit, I busted out a really easy lunch.

Can opener Another new item is this can opener that can multitask as a bottle opener.  It’s completely stainless steel which means this baby can go in the dishwasher to be cleaned.  Most can openers cannot, so they get cruddy, rusty, and gross.  My new jaws of life will always be sparkly!

Smoothie, soup, snacks, fruit Lunch was a smoothie:

  • 1C Carrot juice
  • 1C OJ
  • 1C Unsweetened cranberry juice
  • Kale
  • Frozen blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • Frozen peaches
  • Frozen mango

Amy’s lentil soup which is amazing.  A side plate of carrots, cucumbers, and crackers with some fruit hanging out in the back.

After lunch we kicked it the rest of the day gaming and when I say the rest of the day, I mean that quite literally.  Ah downtime couch potato action is lovely at times.

I put together a really simple dinner for us and it’s one we’ve been looking forward for a while.

Dinner time We had salads and a cheese tasting plate.  The salads were typical salads with a different dressing:

  • White wine vinegar
  • Olive oil
  • Dijon
  • Honey
  • S&P, garlic powder, and some Italian seasoning

The cheese plate had, from left to right, starting at 12pm:

  • Gorgonzola
  • English Farmhouse cheddar
  • Parano
  • Tuscan Cheddar
  • Manchego
  • Dry Jack

In the middle was:

  • Smoked salmon
  • Chicken sausages
  • Mustard, honey, and peach compote
  • Crackers in the way back

Splash of wine for kicks.  I tried some of the gorgonzola on a sweet cracker with honey.  Totally not my thing; not horrible, but I didn’t really dig it.  I was disappointed in the manchego because it was lacking depth and bite.  The dry jack was okay and the farmhouse cheddar was divine.  Parano is one of my faves so it’s always awesome.

We chatted for a bit while we ate and had a really great time.  After dinner, just a tad more gaming then it was off to bed for me.  I was totally tired!

  1. I am the same as you: early to bed early to rise. Sadly this jives with literally no one else I know…oh well, I love my schedule :)

Jealous of y’all’s dinner at Bonefish! One of my favorite places for sure. But I do like your version of dessert, it sounds nice.

  2. I’m not going to just toss you props for your 8 miler, I’m going to smack you over the head with them. You go girl!!

I like the Bonefish too, although it’s a chain. It’s pretty yummy.

You and Scott are so stinkin’ cute. It’s always so nice to see people happy :-)

  3. Girl, I love reading these 2 day recaps, but I completely forget on the things I want to tell you when I am done reading them. LoL, I think I need to start brining a pen and note pad and jotting them down so I don’t forget! ;)

Oh okay, first of all, CONGRATS LADY on the AWESOME 8 mile run. That’s truly incredible and I am so proud of you.

Second, I have only been to Bonefish once, but I really enjoyed it for a Chain restaurant, which I usually avoid like the plague. And, you guys look super adorable all dressed up. What a great date night.

I am totally on the same page with you on only fully enjoying dessert at home. It’s an entire experience for me, and if I wanted to woof down some sub par kind of sweet, I would, but I would so much rather save my sweet time for a more special atmosphere and know that it is something that I will fully enjoy!

Glad you are enjoying this time with your man. Now go off and spend some more time with him. ;)

  4. My husband is a gamer, so he would totally stay up all night and come to bed late, which is why he shouldn’t complain about having the last dog walk of the evening, right?

Love your new pot and can opener. I am so totally not into those dumb electric things, give me a good handheld every time. :)

  5. Awesome run girl!

What is your blender? Do you have a VitaMix?? I’ve been looking for blenders, don’t want to dish out the $400 for a Vita, but want a good in-between alternative. Do you have any recommendations??

Hey, I think I saw you at Target with your husband today?! I was getting into my car with my two boys… I didn’t want to yell, “HEY I READ YOUR BLOG!!!!” to the back of your head…. awkward!

I saw my gynocologist there today too, another awkward run in… I pretended I didn’t see her :-p
