I was pretty much in the kitchen the entire day yesterday. And also doing stuff around the house trying to get caught up on life! Being sick last week really put me behind in terms of getting stuff done. Umph! By the time I crashed last night, I was so tired that writing a post was too much work. You all can dig it, I know, which is why I adore you! I would never be able to handle the pressure to post, that would make me cranky.
I got up around 7am and headed out for a run. OMG being able to run after a week of not running was more glorious than I can even tell you. It was slow because my bod was tired from MT and pulling weeds on Saturday (most especially my hams) and I didn’t go very far, 3.5 miles, but I was running so I was very happy. Plus it was foggy! Next to running in snow, running in/through fog is one of my very favorite things.
I had a glass of CS and hit the shower right away. Then I had a short coffee and breakfast session on the couch with some FoodTV.
Stoneyfield yogurt with chocolate granola. We were out of homemade granola so chocolate had to do. I will tell you right now that my tastes are changing. I’m not big on sweets or sweet things, you guys know that much. I used to be able to handle chocolate granola no problem but this time, it wasn’t working for me. I don’t know if it was because of the combo of French Vanilla yogurt and the chocolate but for whatever reason it was too much with the sweet. I couldn’t finish it. EW. I’m also starting to become a granola snob. I like my granola and that’s about it.
While trying not to be grossed out watching Paula Deen and her family eat a Turducken (vomit), I was HUNGRY since the yogurt didn’t work. I munched on a large Jonagold apple. No pic because we all know what apples look like. I also got some cranberry sauce started and on it’s way to being happy.
My loves got up and I quickly made some Sunday breakfast. I was craving sausage like mad (I can hear you laughing, you know!) but we had no chicken sausage at all. I found some pork sausage in the freezer that I had previously made into patties and cooked, then froze. Those were gonna have to do!
We had some basic waffles with the sausage, and fruit in the middle. Pineapple, orange, and some of my leftover apple. The drink on the side was a combo of apple cider and OJ.
After breakfast, we cleaned up the kitchen and took Rockmonster for his walk. It was so nice outside yesterday that everyone was out doing stuff. Most were putting up their xmas lights and it made me want to get my decorations out and get going already. Holiday songs have been playing nonstop at our house for a while, now it’s time to bring it for real!
When we got back home, it was time for me to get busy and get working in the kitchen. I prepped and made a lot of things, like granola, which caused the heavens to sing. I also did laundry which made the heavens do nothing because laundry isn’t exciting.
Scott finally put up our new curtains for the living room and they look so much better! They also block out light and air more which is perfect because that room tends to be really cold in the winter.
Once I was a bit more caught up on house and life things, it was time for dinner. Oooo what a fabbo Sunday Supper we had!
Crab cakes with panko crumbs, no mayo, and tons of flavor. Take that Maryland!
Coleslaw with lots o’ dill and also no mayo. Take that the entire Southern U.S.!
And also some creamy spicy polenta with just a touch of butter but no milk. Take that, uh, someone!
I totally rocked dinner last night for shiz.
At this point I crashed on the couch in my jams and watched old movies with Scott. We finished one from 1932 called White Zombie and then we watched a French film from the 50s’ called Diabolique which was weird but not really as creepy as touted.
I had a glass of white and some cookahs! After the movies I promptly crashed in bed hardcore.
Today is the start of Thanksgiving vacation for me! Wooo! Although I have a ton of stuff to get done making it not a leisurely vacation but I’m not working, so hello vacation! I’ll take it!
I started off the day with a yogurt mess. I did a little happy dance at the chance to eat some of my granola because I am that kind of dork.
More Stoneyfield, huge red delicious, and granola. I ate that entire bowl too! And since it was vacation AND a Monday, two cups of coffee were in order.
I did some blog related work, started laundry (never ending, lordy!), and then took my mushface out for a walk. When we got back it was just starting to sprinkle, thankfully we were home by then!
I made a light and quick lunch for myself since I wasn’t too terribly hungry by this point but knew I needed to eat something.
A plate of carrots, leftover salmon, and crackers.
- 1C Carrot juice
- 1C Unsweetened cranberry juice
- 1 banana
- Frozen blueberries
- Frozen spinach
Pineapple and orange slices.
Hummus for the crackers. I didn’t finish anything at this meal, a first! I literally just picked here and there and then was done with it.
I mopped the kitchen floor and felt proud of myself because it’s a chore I hate. It’s not that I hate the act of mopping, that’s fine. It’s that I hate mopping my floor because no matter what, it is a losing battle. The tile in our kitchen is so light that it shows everything, even hair. So living with a dog that drools over food, a husband just being a husband, and me who cooks a lot, that floor gets skanky fast. No sooner do I mop and it’s dirty again. I hate that stinkin’ floor.
Then I did more blog work and more laundry. I haven’t done laundry in weeks which is why our pile is gigantor this time around. Normally I would have been done by now. :p
Dinner was something new! I made some butternut squash soup!
I just gave it a whirl since I bought some canned b-nut puree at Whole Foods. I used both the puree and also sweet potatoes in the soup, along with onions, carrots, celery, and chipotle pepper. I wanted a spicy soup! I got to try out my immersion blender for the first time, love it!
Along side the soup was a fall salad:
- Red leaf lettuce
- Crushed walnuts
- Pumpkin seeds
- Cranberry goat cheese
Dressing was some cranberry sauce + dijon + white wine vinegar + olive oil
Kim, I got the goat cheese at Sam’s! I bought a variety pack and this was one of the flavors. Although I bet you could make a version by mixing stuff together and reforming the cheese.
So good! With bread on the side for kicks.
Cooking/Recipe Magazine Suggestions:
I’m looking for some new cooking magazines to check out! I currently get Ray-Ray’s mag but I hate it, the message it sends, and the company’s tactics. I used to like it but now can’t stand it. I’ll explain.
I would pick it up occasionally when I saw it out while I was shopping. I got it so frequently Scott said to look into a subscription, so I did. It wasn’t expensive and it was for two years. Since then my eating habits have changed a great deal and her mag revolves a lot around meat and meat based dishes. Which is okay because I eat meat on occasion, but like meat, I only want those recipes in moderation. There are barely any veggie or veggie based recipes at all. What is up with that?
There’s also a lot of ads for packaged and fake products. Not real food. I can’t take you seriously when your mag is loaded with ads from Campbell’s proclaiming itself as healthy soup. Sorry.
Second, she creates her own pet food because pets should have good food, right? Right. This is why my dog is on a real foods diet. I can dig on some kibbles because there are quality dog foods out there. Anyway, she creates her own, offers pet recipes in the mag, and talks about great dog nutrition. Yet her mag has ads for Alpo. I. Don’t. Think. So. This is actually what made me decide for sure that I was not renewing my subscription.
And let’s talk about that subscription shall we? It’s for two years. Two full years. When I hit the one year mark, they started with their bully tactics to get me to renew. Letters and emails telling me how my subscription was about to end and I better hurry to sign back up so I don’t miss anything! Now each mag that comes in the mail also comes with a letter informing me that subscription is about to end. I have a whole other year left for crying out loud! DANG girl it’s not like you need the dough, alright. STEP OFF.
But the best part? The new December/January issue has tips on what to do with canned cranberry sauce. Our relationship is ovah!
I am done with Rays. I want a magazine that offers tips, tricks, and recipes on real whole food. I tried Cooks Illustrated but didn’t care for it too much because at the time it was black and white. When it comes to food I want to see some color. Now that it is in color, maybe I’ll look at it again. This is my long winded way of asking, what food magazines do you like!
