July 31st, 2009: Restful

Hi guys!  I had thought about running this morning but as I was going to bed last night at 12:30am (way past grandma’s bedtime!), I decided to play it by ear.  When I got up at 7am because Rocky was pitching a fit, I noticed it was raining.  Coupled with the fact I was drag-ass tired I decided to go back to bed.

Something I almost never do for multiple reasons.  But today I was just too dang tired!  I tried my best to sleep in but phone calls (totally annoying) and Scott moving around too much caused me to get up just shy of 9am.  I technically did get extra sleep so I’m calling it good.

Coffee

A cup of coffee joined me as I headed into the office for some nice face time with the computer.  I read some blogs and realized my email and site were down for a bit.  Thankfully the issue seemed to be resolved quickly and I was then able to start on my race recap post.  I needed some fuel to get me through.

Yogurt, apple, and walnuts

It was late morning so I didn’t need a big breakfast.  I also didn’t feel like a big breakfast but wanted an apple more than anything else at that time.  I decided to have 1/2 a red delicious with some yogurt, small scoop of rhubarb blueberry sauce, and some walnuts to see me through.  In the yogurt container because that’s what High Klass folks do.  It was delicious!

I worked on my recap and read a few more blogs.  And then I decided that lunch should probably happen in a timely fashion.  But it didn’t and we ate lunch at some point after 1pm. :p

Salad

Today’s Salad:

  • Mixed greens
  • Shredded carrot and parsnip
  • Cucumber
  • Broccoli
  • Chopped red onion

Honey mustard dressing on top.

Watermelon and cantaloupe

More melons!

Smoothie

Today’s Smoothie:

  • 1C pineapple juice
  • 1C OJ
  • 1C US cranberry juice
  • Kale
  • Carrot
  • Parsnip
  • 1/2 a banana
  • 1/2 a red delicious
  • Frozen mango
  • Frozen peaches
  • Frozen blueberries

Blendy goodness!

And then I proceeded to blow through this entire lunch.  And again I have no “group shot” picture.  Gah!  I don’t know where mah brain is at!

Portion Control

Yesterday’s breakfast/lunch post, Rose asked me about portion control.  I’m going to try not to get too long winded with my answer! :p

When I first started eating healthier, one of the first things I did was cut my portions down a great deal.  I knew I was overeating but I wasn’t sure by how much.  I cut my portions down to small scoops of whatever I was having and if meat was involved then I only ate half and saved the rest.  Over time I realized that I didn’t need huge portions of something in order to feel content and happy.  I also slowed down how fast I ate.  Back in the day I was an extremely slow eater.  The type who everyone else is waiting on to finish their meals?  That was me.  While everyone else was done and cleaning up dishes, I wasn’t even halfway through my meal.

I realized that this helped me keep portions in check and reduce overeating.  I strived to get back to that.  While I’m not quiet as slow as I used to be, I’m back to being a slow eater.  I finish my meals before Scott does but that’s only because my portions are smaller.

In doing all of this, I also realized that my body never lies to me.  It always tells me what it needs, when it needs it, and how much.  Always! I just needed to pay more attention.  I learned that if I ate until I felt “full” or had a “full” type of feeling, I had already overeaten.  If I’m “full”, it’s only a minute later and I will start feeling “over full”.  That uncomfortable bloaty type of full.  For a long time I thought this was normal and that I was doing well!  Then I realized that for me this is not normal. I don’t want to be uncomfortable or feel icky after a meal!  I want to be happy and content.  I started paying closer attention to how I feel and now I’ll stop eating when I’m not hungry any more.  Sometimes I’ll know right away and sometimes I’ll stop eating and wait a few minutes.  If I still feel hungry then I’ll eat more, if I don’t, then I’m done.

I do not count calories or measure out my meals.  That feels too restrictive to me.  Having to get out a measuring cup to make sure I only have 1/2 a cup of rice or whatever would drive me bonkers.  Because it would feel like a ration and like my intake is being monitored and limited.  Life is too short for measuring cups!  I put out a scooping and call it good.  Either I eat it all or I don’t.  I listen to what my body says.

I also go by what I have eaten that day.  If for some reason my schedule is off and let’s say I don’t have a normal for me lunch but something smaller, then I make sure to have a bigger than usual dinner.  And vice versa, if I have a huge lunch for whatever reason, dinner will be smaller.  If I know I might feel like a treat later in the evening, I might not eat as big of a dinner.  That’s my way of balancing things out without feeling like I’m restricting or limiting myself.  I believe in balance and moderation, not elimination.  Again, life is too short to tell yourself you’re never going to have something ever again because it’s “bad”.

I did get long winded!  The easy answer is no, I don’t measure anything.  I sort of just eyeball everything and go from there. :D
