June 1st, 2009: Hockey Fan

Hi guys!  I am seriously in need of more sleep in my life.  When the perpetual bags under my eyes start to have bags then I know the big A is not getting enough sleep.  But with these playoff games starting and ending so stinking late, what’s a girl to do?

I got up around 8am and greeted Monday the best I could.  It was freezing again today, this is crazy weather.  Like Mo’ Nature forgot to take her hormone pill or something.  Especially now that it’s June.  Whoa did like the first 5 months of the year fly by for anyone else?  Actually I really shouldn’t complain about the cool weather too much, it makes for much better training weather.

I was starving when I woke up this morning and dived right into breakfast.

Yogurt bowl

Even though it was chilly, I wasn’t really feeling the warm breakfast cereal this morning.  I had a yogurt mess instead:

  • 2% Fage
  • Fruit and nut granola
  • Cranberries
  • Frozen raspberries
  • Frozen blueberries

With a cup of coffee that I could tell Scott spiked with some extra cinnamon.  Mmmmm.  Mondays mean laundry, meh.  So after showering, I got a load started on its way.  I ran Rocks out for his walk because it started clouding over very quickly.  We made it home just before it started raining pretty hard.  We had some nice thunder for background noise but nothing to write home about.  I would love a good kickass thunderstorm!  I adore them and love how they rejuvenate the earth.  The smell and the way everything looks is gorgeous.

A few loads of laundry later and it was lunch time.  I was starving again!  It was still gloomy out and still chilly, which made me want some soup.

Kicked up

Amy’s Tomato soup that I added some extra spices too and some chopped spinach.

Green Monster

Green smoothie:

  • 1C unsweetened cranberry juice
  • Splash of vanilla soymilk
  • Water to bring it close to 3C
  • Kale
  • Banana
  • Cantaloupe
  • Frozen peaches
  • Frozen mango

To create a minty green colored smoothie.

The Gang

There’s also some bread in the back for dipping into hummus or soup.  I had 1/2 a slice of pumpernickel and only 1/2 my smoothie.  This green monster was not tasty today.  I think I bought a bad bunch of kale.  It’s not a nice dark green color but almost neon green looking.  It was all the store had so I bought it.  The smoothie almost had an astringent aftertaste to it.  Even Scott couldn’t finish his and he has more tolerance than I do.  Strange!  Guess I’ll be using spinach if the kale is the problem.  I’ll have to test it out and see.

Always a Pens fan!

I’ve been a Pens fan since 1990, that would put me in the 13-14 age range.  A very young A!  I couldn’t even tell you how I stumbled onto hockey. I think my sister started watching it and then I picked it up too but I can say that from the moment I watched my first game I was hooked!  It’s action packed all the time and other sports just seem so boring in comparison.  Attending a game is even better!

Ta-da!  My beloved Jagr jersey.  I bought that baby in 1991 with my own money that I had to take out of the bank.  I had to get permission from my mom to take the money out because all money I ever got (from birthdays, Christmas, you name it) went right into my savings account.  This was to save money for college.  That jersey cost me $120, yes that’s right, 120 bucks.

Well worth the investment!

Now the money shots!

Singage Left Side

Singage Left Side

Not only do I have an authentic Jagr jersey, but I’ve got 9 former Penguin signatures on this as well.  This is my left shoulder/back area.

Names starting from left to right:

Bryan Trottier #19 – Inducted in to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997

Jay Caufield #16

Mike Needham #39

Jaromir Jagr #68

And the other side, right shoulder/back area.

Names from left to right:

Mike Stapelton #26

Kevin Stevens #25

Ron Francis #10 – Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007

Jeff Daniels #20

Ken Wregget #31

Most of these signatures I obtained at scheduled signings.  Kevin Stevens, my sister and I drove to a mall and stood in line for a while to be able to get his signature.  The others, except Jagr’s, were from a sort of festival type thing held at the Igloo in the summer.  We were able to tour the whole arena, including the locker and workout rooms.  Lots of players on hand for signings and just general dorky hockey fun.

Jagr’s signature was purely by chance!  My sister and I were attending a playoff game and were hanging around in the parking lot because we arrived early.  Jagr pulled up and was heading into the arena.  We snagged him and got our jerseys signed.  I was the last one he signed, he told everyone else no and headed inside. :p  Score!

Remember how I said this jersey was totally worth it?  Well if this jersey only had Jagr’s signature on it, it would be worth over $600.  Considering all the other signatures I have, it’s worth a good penny right now.  There’s no price on the memories and happiness it brings me though. :D

  1. OMG. I loved this post. I had a lifesize poster of Jagr hanging on my bedroom door for most of my life. And I, too, have been going to games since 1992 (I was 8!). My dad and I go every year – we haven’t missed a game in 15 years!

    Go Pens!!!

    • Rose, I had no idea you liked hockey! *hifive* To another Pens fan! All this time I’ve been yapping on and you didn’t say a word. :p I love that you go to games with your dad, that is awesome!

  2. I agree with your comment about how action packed hockey is compared with other sports.

I’ve been to NBA and MLB games, but I had the most fun at an NHL game, even though I was sitting in the nose bleed seats.

    • Hey Marvo, welcome to OHC! The only other professional sports game I’ve been too is a few baseball games which bored me to tears! I couldn’t see anything and it was so slow. Hockey is more up close and personal, which I love!

  3. Damn, you got Ron Francis! One of my hockey heroes, that’s awesome. I wish I had a jersey like that. Now, Pens, if you would please win one at home!

  4. Hope you get back on a good sleep schedule once the playoffs are over!

Awesome breakfast, and even more awesome jersey, pretty cool I must say :)
