Review: Chobani Greek Yogurt

Chobani Yogurt

Chobani Yogurt

Anyone who reads my Daily Eats section knows that I love me some Greek Yogurt.  And even if you don’t read that section, I’ve already reviewed my favorite Greek yogurt, so maybe you’ve seen that.  But just in case you are an OHC virgin (GASP! Let’s fix that quick, shall we?) and brand spanking new to my site, please walk away with knowing about two of my loves:

1. Greek Yogurt

2. Dark as hell beer

Not necessarily in that order.  I do have other loves that interestingly enough also involve yogurt and other dark things, but since this is a Food Blog, how about we stick with the above two for now?  Good.

Even though I have my favorite Greek Yogurt, I am open to expanding both my mind and my mouth.  Meaning, I’m willing to try anything at least once.  Chobani has exploded (not literally or we would be making non-PG references because exploding yogurt is ripe for all kinds of off color jokes) all over the interwebs.  People were getting sent samples and others hav e found it in their stores.  The Chobani fairy did not visit me nor could I find it in stores fro a very long time.  Finally my local Meijer got some in.  To Meijer’s credit, while they are slow about getting in new healthy products, I don’t really think their main clientèle is asking for it.  Even though I complain about their reluctance to get in products (Hello, can we finally have some Whole Wheat pastry flour?) it’s just to myself because I understand what the deal is.

That said, I finally spotted some Chobani at Meijer.  They had small single-serving containers and so I picked up a peach and a blueberry to try.  Again it seems that the preference for these flavored Greek yogurts is 0% fat which I am not down with.  I need a wee bit of fat in my yogurt please.  The fruit is on the bottom so you have to stir a bit to get everything combined.

I’m not going to beat around the bush but flat out tell you that I could not stand these yogurts.  In fact, I disliked them so much I couldn’t even eat them.  That goes for both the peach and the blueberry flavors.  I’m talking, gag-inducing dislike for this yogurt.  I’m shuddering right now at the thought of their taste.

Many people dig them and hey that’s great because while I don’t like the yogurt, Chobani needs love from someone.  Here’s why I am not down with the Cho’ Yo’.

Since there’s no fat, this is not a lovely thick Greek yogurt.  It is thin, made even thinner once you mix in the fruit.  Andrea prefers thickness friends.  Also this yogurt is insanly sweet.  Which is actually what caused me to not be able to eat it.  Thickness or lack there of,  I’ll work with. Sweetness I can’t do anything about.  This was, mouth-puckering, holy shit there must be a cup of refined bleached sugar in this thing, kind of sweet.  Two small bites was all I could manage before passing it off to my husband.  I had to slam a huge glass of water just to wash the taste from my mouth and tongue.  Yuck!

My husband ate them just fine but he did admit that they were very sweet and while edible to him, not his preference.

If you like your yogurt really sweet and are new to Greek yogurt this might be a good start for you.  If you are like me and don’t like things that are overly sweet or prefer a bit of thickness, then I would suggest avoiding this yogurt as much as possible.

  1. By far the best plain Greek yogurt is FAGE but my fave flavored IS the Peach Chobani. So sad you were disappointed! You should send me the leftovers :(

  2. Interesting! I loove the Peach chobani too- i just don’t buy b/c a huge tub of Fage or TJ’s brand is cheaper, and I’m not wild about the sugar from added fruit flavor.

  3. Things I love:

    1. Greek yogurt
    2. Hoppy Ass IPAs

I agree Chobani is a good beginners Greek yogurt. I’m just now transitioning away from it.

  4. Thanks for such an honest review! I’ve never tried Chobani before but I’m not big on the sweetness either. I like adding fruit to my yogurt for sweetness control. On the other hand, I’ve never had Greek yogurt before, so it would definitely be interesting to try it!

  5. I’m a newbie to your blog! And I thought your review on chobani was an interesting one. I fell in love with the stuff last summer when I tried the strawberry for my first time. However, I do agree that they’re a tad bit on the sweet side.

But I have to say, don’t give up on chobani quite yet! Have you tried the plain version? I’m a huge fan. It’s much cheaper then fage and it’s much thicker then the flavored ones.

Great blog, by the way! :D

  6. Dark as hell beer. That is awesome. I second your list and change mine to an authentic German Weiss. I just tried Greek yogurt in recent months and I’m addicted. I like it even for dessert. I doubt I would like the sweet taste you are describing. I do like Chobani, but I prefer vanilla or plain. I tried the Oikos (is that how you spell it?) and that one I love!
