April 8th, 2009: Breakfast and lunch! (Greentastic lunch!)

Hi guys!  Craziness going on around here today!  The roofers are installing the new roof and I can honestly tell you that I understand why most people don’t hang around while it’s being done.  The constant loud banging can get to you.

Yesterday we got the call that the roofers would be arriving “first thing in the morning”.  The supervisor said he would stop in later, around 9-10 to check in and then back a second time.  Scott and I thought that “first thing in the morning” was going to be around 7am when it was light out.  Especially since the supervisor specified that his “later” was going to be 9am.  Normally I would call that early.  So we got up early this morning to await their arrival.

I decided not to run.  Once the roofers get started, if you are in the house you can’t leave the house.  You could try but you risk being pelted by falling debris.  I decided to play it safe and hole up at home especially if they were arriving first thing.

“First thing” is apprantly 8:30am.  Since I got up at 6:30, I could have squeezed a run in most certainly.  So I was a little crabby about not running today.  But perhaps this is a good thing, more on that in a second.

First cup...

First cup...

I had coffee right away this morning.

Then I got caught up on emails and other coorespondence.  Eventually I made some breakfast.  Normally on non-run days I keep breakfast light but I had been up for a few hours at this point and was Hungry.  That’s right, with a capital “H”.  So I made oatbran.

mmmm

mmmm

Regular oatbran with some banana nut granola and cranberries on top.  And a small spoonful of cashew butter.  And another mug of coffee which I only had a few sips of and was done with.

I made my way upstairs and took a shower. I was a skeered to though!  I had visions of the roofers falling through or punching a hole in the roof and crashing down on me while I showered.  Plus you know, guys walking around outside your window as you’re showering is just odd.  But I did it and I don’t think anyone saw anything.  Whew!  Then I started leftover laundry.

Leftover laundry are nonessentials that I wash during the week and not laundry day.  Laundry day is straight up clothes.  Leftovers are bedsheets, towels, blankets and things like that.

And then I made lunch which I’m calling Greentastic.

Even my plate and placemat are green!

Even my plate and placemat are green!

A salad and smoothie!  The salad has:

  • Mixed greens
  • Spinach
  • Cucumber
  • Carrot
  • Celery
  • Sunflower and pumpkin seeds
  • Raisins
  • Red onion
  • Tomato
  • Banana Peppers
  • Crushed Mary’s Gone Crackers (5)
  • 1/2 a morningstar chic’k patty

Topped with a dash of buffalo sauce, red wine vinegar, and olive oil.  So good!  The smoothie was different today:

  • 1.5 C orange juice
  • 1.5 C cranberry juice (unsweetened)
  • 1 kiwi
  • Some cantaloupe
  • Kale ( a good bit)
  • Banana
  • Frozen pineapple

Because the pineapple was the only frozen fruit, this came out more like a juice than a smoothie. It was awesome and probably the favorite of the ones I’ve made so far.  Lunch was very filling both physically and for the soul.  When I just get to “oink” (a la Erin) out on veggies and fruit like this it makes my day and makes my body oh so happy. :D

Injuries and running

Several of us foodies have gotten together to form a support group of sorts for those of us running our first 1/2s this year.  In a recent email my issue came up and  so I’ll share that with you now. :)  At this point I don’t even know what’s going on but I’ll describe it for you the best I can.  My right knee area has been aching lately.  First it hurt and was sore to the touch and swollen a bit.  I didn’t think too much about it because I do two martial arts, one that involves kicking that area and one that involves joint locks and limb destruction techniques.  So I’m used to things hurting and being swollen for a bit.  Then after my last long run, it was a bit swollen again and still ached.  That’s when I realized that it was my run that was causing this and not martial arts.  It’s the outside portion of my right knee and a little bit on the back of my knee, still the right most side of my right knee.  It also clicks and pops as I walk.  Not constantly but a good bit.  The clicking I didn’t think anything about because my knees pop, crack, and so on all the time.  They always have.  I bought knee sleeves hoping to help stablize the area.  They have not arrived yet.

But now it was brought up that maybe it’s an IT issue and not a knee issue at all.  And well shit, is about all I have to say on that.  So now I’m trying to research that topic and figuring out what to do.  Not running is not an option.  I could live with sticking to maybe at max 8miles but I wouldn’t be happy about it.  I’m going to run this 1/2 for sure.  But I don’t want it to be my last 1/2.  I really enjoy long distance running.  It’s extremely challenging and very rewarding.  Plus for a not fast runner, such as myself, distances are awesome.  Short and sweet and fast are not as fun.

So there you have it.  I don’t know what’s going on but I’m thinking of making an appointment to see my sports medicine doc and talking with him.  But I’m putting it out there in the event that maybe you have seen or experienced something similiar.  I’m sort of feeling a little blue about the whole situation now.  Stupid injury or whatever you are.

  1. clicking and popping is typically related to a softening of the cartilidge… which is no good. i would go see a physical therapist ASAP!! good luck!

  2. I would definitely talk to your doc, for sure.

Always be sure to stretch after running. Massage might help a bit too.

But I definitely think you need to see the doc – you don’t want to hurt yourself further.

  3. see your sports doc for sure since you are having swelling.

now when I had Runners Knee my knee did get very swollen… the cure was to do physical therapy. I still do it all the time cause it’s easy to do while watching tv. basically it’s just leg lifts. Try BigKneePain.com for exercises

  4. Natalie says:

i definitely recommend seeing a doctor….i tried to self-diagnose when i had knee problems and i was wrong :) not to mention the fact that he sent me to a physical therapist and after a month i recovered. running injuries are SO frustrating…i’m actually heading back to my therapist today so he can take a look at my pulled hip flexor! i just can’t say enough good things about physical therapy though…so go to your doctor asap!!

  5. I hope your knee issue is something temporary and fixable. One of my friends was running for a while and came down with “runner’s knee” and now she can’t run until she’s cleared by a doctor (and doing PT).
