February 3rd, 2009: Breakfast

Hi guys!  I couldn’t wait till after lunch to get posting.  I’m in too much of a good mood! :swingdance:  No lie I headed up to bed to read last night around 8:30 or so.  I probably could have even called lights out not long after 9pm.  I was a tired mess.  But I stayed up reading and talking with Scott till about a quarter of 10pm, then I had to call uncle.  At this point I passed out and woke up with my alarm at 6am. Oooo that felt early.

When I opened the sliding glass door curtains, I saw a dusting of snow on the ground.  Meh.  I am tired of you snow, please go away!  I took care of Rocks and then made the saddest bowl of oats ever.

I was starving this morning and needed to have oats.  My dilemma was that we have no bananas (I’m also on my last tub of 2% fage and having a slight emergency food situation).  You know that a banana in my oats is a must so I can 1. get a fruit in and 2. sweeten my oats.  I decided to push on through and make oats anyway.  “Plenty of people make oats without a banana!” I said to myself rather unconvincingly.  But I pushed forward.  I added a little bit of brown sugar instead (and cringed a little bit inside).

My oats turned out too thin.  Even though I added 3/4 scoop of vanilla protein powder, that didn’t thicken things up enough.  My mix-ins were walnuts, cranberries, and dark chocolate PB.  I ate the entire bowl of sorry oats.  They weren’t bad just sort of lame.

Along with morning coffee + creamer which was AMAZING this morning.  I don’t know what Scott did but it was perfecto.  Speaking of coffee we are considering a French Press.  Thoughts?  Recommendations?  Any sort of info would be great!

After taking care of some bidness, I woke up Scotty-poo and then got changed for my run.

HALLELUJAH!

Sweet jeebus but it had been way too long since I ran.  The temp said it was 12F for my run but it had to have been warmer than that because I was burning up hot.  I had to unzip my jacket a bit I was so toasty.  The sun was shining and it was beautiful outside!  I had the most glorious run and was so happy to be out and stretching my legs.  My left hip and ankle were peachy.  I only did a quick 3.5 miler.  I didn’t want to push myself too much since I was coming off of some soreness and not having run for two days.  There were a few crappy icy patches but nothing to worry about.  It did slow my time down a wee bit.  I wanted to keep going and stay outside but I curbed it and came back home.

I had my loverly CS and then hit the floor for some yoga.  Twenty sweet minutes later I was relaxed and in the shower.  Normally after my shower I need a small snack but so far I’m doing okay.  I’m wondering if the protein powder in the oats is the reason?

Now let’s talk about Motivation!!

When starting a new exercise program or adopting a new lifestyle change, people want to see results right away.  And when they don’t see results right away they tend to get frustrated and angry.  “This doesn’t work!”  “Why did I think I could do this?!”  And then they stop doing whatever it is they are trying.

It’s a very defeatist attitude to have.  I’ve been there.  When I first started running, I wasn’t seeing any weight change.  However, there were some inches being lost.  I was frustrated because I have heard so many times how the ideal is to lose a pound a week, if you are looking to lose weight, right?  I wasn’t doing that.

Then it finally hit me that my body just doesn’t work that way.  And that everyone is different and everyone is going to have different results when doing something.  I literally wanted to smack myself in the head once I figured that out.  It was a huge, “Duh!” moment for me.

I think sometimes these sort of negative thoughts also occur when people hit a plateau.  Plateaus can be conquered.  But you do have to stay focused and motivated in order to get past the plateau.  Don’t let the scale or whatever get in your head too much.

I bring all this up because I came across a great article today.  The AntiJared has a great post up about staying motivated and remaining positive.  Please take a minute to read it and give some props to him for his amazing journey he’s going through.  And if you aren’t reading him, add him to your reader!

Also giving a shout out to Tina over at Carrots ‘N’ Cake because today is her blogversary! Hooray!!

  1. Glad you had such a great run. I’m headed out for mine this evening and hoping the sun stays behind the clouds. :) I find that I tend to be an exception to the rule with most things health wise. My weight won’t budge unless I put in a lot of hard work and long exercise sessions. I’ve come to accept it – just the way I am.

  2. You’re right — everyone’s different, but it is frustrating to see others lose so quickly! How long do you think it took for you to see it on the scale? I’m just getting started with something that’s more regular, so I’ve got a long way to go :)

    • Becky, It took me a long time before I saw any movement on the scale. Like a good month and a half. I was really frustrated at first because I thought, “WTH! I’m running almost everyday, what is going on?!” And then suddenly the next time I checked like 10lbs were gone. And I’ve been going through that same cycle. Nothing for a really long time, and then bam, Xlbs just gone. Now that I know that is how my body operates I don’t get so frustrated when the scale doesn’t move for a while!

  3. Once you switch to a French Press, you’ll never want to go back to drip coffee – the difference is that amazing. Bodum makes the best presses – definitely get one with a glass carafe, because the plastic ones make the coffee taste funny. I have the Chambord. Be sure to note the size in ounces, not cups, because the cup sizes they use are somewhere around 4 oz. A four-cup press will make one large cup of coffee or two really small ones.

Use good coffee, and if you can, grind it at home right before you brew.
