Review: Red Gold’s Culinary Classics

I was recently contacted by Red Gold to see if I would like to try out some of their new tomato products that they are putting on the market.

I’ve worked with Red Gold before and I enjoy their products a great deal so I agreed!  I got sent two 28oz cans of their newest products to hit the market.

The one I was drawn to first was their Culinary Classics Sliced Tomatoes and Zucchini.  I gave the ingredient list a once over and there was nothing scary or weird in the list.  Bonus!

I decided to use the tomatoes in a seafood stew.

This stew has a tomato and chicken stock base and is filled with potatoes, cod, bay scallops, and shrimp.

I’m still tinkering with the recipe, you’ll have to give me some time with it!

The tomatoes had a great flavor and I thought being sliced they would be on the thinner side but they were HUGE.  In fact they were so big that for this stew, I had to get out the immersion blender and break them down just a tad.

I was disappointed that there wasn’t more zucchini in the mix.  Very few slices of zucchini made it into the can I used and the ones that were there were very thin.  We like veggies over here so seeing some more green would have been nice.

The color was a bright red and again the tomatoes had really great flavor and freshness taste to them.  I noticed these cans the next time I was in the grocery store and they were around $1.39 for the 28oz size.

Would I purchase these?  If I was looking for something a little different or wanted some heartier tomatoes for a dish but they wouldn’t make regular rotation.

Thank you Red Gold for sending me some of your tomatoes to test out!

Disclaimer: I was sent these tomatoes for free by Red Gold. I was under no obligation to blog about them and the opinions expressed here are my own.

I haven’t noticed, but are there seeds in the canned tomatoes? Especially these sliced ones? I haven’t made soup in ages, so I haven’t had a chance to check. I’m just curious since I canned a bunch last summer and was lazy and left seeds in.

I bought these last night for $0.99. They were delicious, but I also was wishing there were more zucchini in it. I made it with garlic and put some wheat penne pasta in it. I also bought the chipotle flavor, I can’t wait to try it.
