Review: SO Delicious Coconut Milk

Since I mention this stuff all the time in a lot of my recipes, I figured that I should explain it a little bit in case you haven’t tried it yet or are curious about it.

I’ve been using it for months now.  Well maybe even coming up on a year?  That’s totally possible.

Our affair goes a little something like this, I spotted it in the grocery store and decided to give it a try.  I bought the vanilla version and really it did nothing for me.  It was a tad sweet and ended up not being my thing.  It didn’t work in coffee as a creamer substitute, and I didn’t like making oats with it.  So I forgot about it, putting it aside as another product that didn’t really fit the HQ needs.

Then something nudged me and said that maybe I should give the unsweetened version a try.  I did and haven’t stopped buying it since.

Scott and I aren’t huge milk fans, we used to be back in the day but now not so much.  We use a good bit of soymilk throughout the day, it goes in our oats and it goes in our coffee.  I was looking for a product that I could use in baking, cooking, and smoothie making that was not soy or dairy based. While we personally don’t have an issue with soy, I don’t want to overload our systems with it either.  Regarding dairy, we just prefer it to be in the form of cheese or yogurt or butter.

We’re also not a big fan of almond milk. You can see how this narrows down the playing field a great deal.

I turned to Unsweetened SO Delicious Coconut Milk to help me out and it’s proved to be a winner.

First off it doesn’t taste like anything, not even coconut.  It is almost like a slightly thicker and creamier water.  Honestly.  But it works great for cooking!  I use it to make mashed potatoes, to make cream sauces, to make soups, and even with baking.  You can’t tell coconut milk has been used and no one would know you didn’t use regular milk unless you told them.

It makes great smoothies, resulting in a really creamy smoothie that isn’t overpowered by a coconut flavor but instead you get all the flavor of the ingredients that you used.

Mac ‘n Cheese, creamy soups, and fantastic gravies I have made with this stuff (just to name a few!).  I use it in anyplace where I would use milk or cream.  I’m very pleased with the product and am happy that I gave it another chance.

What are your thoughts on coconut milk?

So Delicious coconut milk is nothing more than flavered water. It’s not even watered down coconut milk. Buy the real thing and water it down with purified water if you must. You can water it down 4 to 1 and far, far better and tastier than that stuff. Best ‘Brand’ is “Tai’ you can get it at ay Candian super store. Don’t get the lite it’s just watered down. Check the contents.
I drink it straight, wonderful on Kashi cearel.

  1. I’ve tried this, but it was the unsweetened- totally grossed me out. I’m also not a fan of soy or almond milk either. There’s a hazelnut milk out there that tasted good…but it was a chocolate flavor, so that’s not a fair assessment.

Now that being said, I do purchase the unsweetened vanilla almond milk from Trader Joe’s- for oats, smoothies, baking. NOT for drinking. Oh, unless it’s in an iced coffee for a bit of flavor boost that replaces using cream.

I’ve also been dairy free (other than goat cheese and some mozzarella) for two weeks now just to see if it had an effect on my body/weight loss. I have noticed that I’ve not been bloated like I’ve been for months, but I’m not entirely sure if that’s due to not drinking milk. I had been drinking a lot of milk before because it’s an easy snack that’s got protein in it. Experiment still in process…

  2. Your mac and cheese looks incredible! Recipe, please!?

We live on So Delicious coconut milk! It’s the only “milk” my kids will drink, and we use it in everything from cereal to soup to smoothies. And I love baking with it! It gives everything such a wonderful texture.

@Maureen, the fats in coconut oil are healthy. They are metabolized differently than saturated animal fats and other vegetable oils, and have many, many health benefits including being good for your heart. Plus, So Delicious coconut milk has a lot less fat and calories than canned coconut milk. The unsweetened has just 50 calories per cup!

  3. Wow, I have never even heard of this SO Coconut milk. I know that I like the coconut milk out of the can, but it sounds like this is a little more watery. I’m curious though the nutritional stats on this compared to the can of coconut milk. Sounds like it works well for your cooking and such. I will have to keep my eyes open when I’m nat the store next time.

  4. I’ve just started seeing this in my stores here and am thinking of trying it soon. I still have some almond milk in the fridge, so I didn’t want to buy any until that was gone.

But it sounds great! I do like the unsweetened vanilla almond milk for smoothies and cereal, but I also buy regular milk from a local dairy that I use in my coffee and for cooking.

On a related topic, we’re going to try coconut water as an alternative to Gatorade and other sports drinks. I bought some today but we haven’t had any yet. If you’re curious, I’ll let you know how it goes!

I’m having the vanilla coconut milk right now. I’m not a fan as it has a weird, almost artificial, aftertaste. Will have to try the unsweetened regular flavor to see if it’s any better.

I tried it today morning in my morning cereal, totally grossed me out. You were right about it tasted like nothing at all, like white creamy water, too natural for me, i am going back to goat milk.

I have been using this unsweetened So for about a month. On its own, it has to me a pretty distinct metal/mineral aftertaste, I think because of its supplementation (with magnesium, selenium, zinc, calcium). I mix it with an orangey/tropical fruit flavored (Jay Robb) whey powder, and it tastes great. I do not use it for other purposes because of the aftertaste.

Just started using instead of lactose free milk. Love it! I bought the vanilla and used it in my Shakeology I also put 2 tbs of aloe Vera juice in it.i have many stomach issues and so far this concoction is really helping me out.

My 7yr old recently found out she has a dairy allergy. We tried alot of the milk substitutes including the soy, almond, and rice and none of them have been tasty enough for my daughter to enjoy on a regular basis except the chocolate soy. The coconut milk is a winner. We buy the Original kind that is lightly sweetened but not flavored. She uses it in her cereal, smoothies, and I use it in place of milk in all the baking I do for her and you wouldn’t know the difference. She even likes to drink it straight without any issues.
Recently we started to buy the So-Delicious coconut milk yogurt (very good), and we love the ice cream and ice cream treats as well. I have yet to try the coffee creamer (as planet organic was out of stock), but I hear it’s yummy as well.
Such a lifesaver for our little girl. Now if only there was someway we could get cheese.

I bought the unsweetened So Delicious coconut milk because my fella is a newly diagnosed diabetic and a milk drinking fiend. I wanted to find something that didn’t have as much carbs in it as milk (which has 12 grams or there abouts for 8 oz). I made blueberry smoothies with it.
1 cup of frozen blueberries, 1 cup of the coconut milk, 3 tablespoons flaxseed meal and 2 teaspoons stevia. Then I mixed it with a hand blender. It is more like a blueberry sorbet than a smoothie, but very good. He doesn’t care for it because it tastes like blueberries. I love it. But then I love blueberries. So I’ve kept making it for myself.

The coffee creamer is okay but expensive.

This is not worth it. It’s watered down, doesn’t taste at all like coconut or milk. I cooked some tapioca with it to use it up but big waste of good tapioca. I’ll have to go back to soy milk, at least it claims to be organic and closer to milk taste. Wish I had seen these comments before I purchased this but I had never seen the brand before. It will be a long time before I buy coconut milk.

  13. I bought the Chocolate version of SO this week for the first time. Most of my kids like it- my chocolate-loving daughter refused to drink the rest of her cup.. I haven’t tried the vanilla SO coconut milk yet. I did try canned white coconut milk and it tasted like coconut. After emptying some of the can, I realized it would be a good idea to shake it before drinking so that it is mixed well.

    • Rebecca, I haven’t tried the chocolate version! I should look for some. :) The canned coconut milk is definitely more coconutty because it’s actual coconut cream as opposed to a diluted version.

I’ve been drinking Harmless Harvest Raw Coconut Water for the past year. Decided to try So Delicious Original Coconut Milk this weekend as I didn’t have time to make my weekly batch of fresh coconut milk. First of all I was totally disappointed when it had no taste at all. Secondly checkout the ingredients for something that suppose so be good and pure; sure has lots of BS. Basic recipe buy organic coconut flakes or fresh brown coconut and Harmless Harvest Coconut Water blend and strain it through a filtration bag. This would taste 10,000 better and have lots more nutrition. Google raw coconut milk recipes.

I agree with most who say it is tasteless. I got it to try since it was on sale, but I can’t see buying it again. I use it in coffee and it is acceptable but not good.

  16. Christine says:

I have had delicious coconut milk so I decided to try SO unflavored coconut milk. It is so disgusting. There is not even a HINT of coconut flavor in it. I ended up pouring it down the drain. I’ll go back to my previous brand.

  17. Christine says:

And as an afterthought…besides not tasting remotely like coconut, it also has a metallic taste. I wonder how these companies can claim that their product tastes so good. Do they even try it themselves???

  18. I have had a lot of bloating issues and also acid reflux.I had gone from 135 to 150 and had a huge appetite.I went to the doctor and I weighed 150.I went three weeks later nagfter drinking this milk and I had lost four pounds.I was not crazy about the taste so I mix a little Hershey’s syrup onit.I use virgin coconut oil and had learned of how it helps you lose weight , so I tried the miolk and I swear by it.Cococnut milk has lauric acid which is the same thing found in breast milk.It is healthy.this stuff has curbed my appetite a lot.I love it.

  19. John says:

I just brought a pack of six from Everettt Costco this morning. It tasted like nothing at all except it looks like white water. I do not understand why they called it coconut cream. The name is very strange. Maybe it is for marketing purposes but they should warn consumers: “it has no coconut taste. Buy it at your own risk.”
