Review: Snikiddy Cheddar Fries

Have you guys ever had those Andy Capp’s Cheddar Fries?  They can be found in the chip aisle at the grocery store and they are completely horrible (Here’s Good Guide’s Nutrition Stats for the Cheddar Fries) for you, yet totally addictive tasting.  Some people like the Hot Fries the best.  You know those fries?

Well I used to love those cheddar fries.  For serious.  I would sometimes have them as a snack with a glass of red wine because that’s the kind of Klassy girl that I am.  Plus they are cheap!  And if you were lucky enough that your grocery store was having them on sale, you could get them even cheaper!

Now the times have changed and you all know that I limit my intake of processed foods down to the bare minimum.  Yes I still eat packaged crackers and I still love me some chips.  I’m only human after all!  I also try really hard to look for healthier alternatives to some of my favorite stuff just so I can have a treat every now and again.

I never expected to find an alternative to Cheddar Fries.  Honestly, I figured this was one snack that was lost to me forever.  Then one fateful day I was breezing through the grocery store when I stopped right in my tracks causing my cart to skid right out into a shelf full of protein powders.  I didn’t even care (Sorry Jay Robb!)  because I was too busy looking at this little bag of potential deliciousness.

Snikiddy Cheddar Cheese Fries.  I probably stared at this bag for a good five minutes before even picking it up to hold and look over.  Was my mind deceiving me?  Was someone trying to play a really cruel trick on me?  Because tempting me with healthy fries and then busting that bubble would in fact be terribly cruel.

I picked up the bag ever so gently and read the ingredient listing.  It seriously blew me away!  Yes it is still a processed product but for a processed chip like item, the ingredients are pretty good.  Check them out:

INGREDIENTS: CORNMEAL, POTATO FLAKES, SUNFLOWER OIL, SEASONING (WHEY, CHEDDAR CHEESE [CULTURED PASTEURIZED MILK, SALT, ENZYMES], WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, SALT, DRY BUTTERMILK, SOYBEAN OIL, ONION POWDER, YEAST EXTRACT, CULTURED WHOLE MILK, NONFAT MILK, ROMANO CHEESE FROM COW’S MILK [CULTURED PASTEURIZED PART SKIM MILK, SALT, ENZYMES], PARMESAN CHEESE [CULTURED PART SKIM MILK, SALT, ENZYMES], MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, CITRIC ACID, LACTIC ACID, EXTRACTIVES OF ANNATTO AND TURMERIC).

You can read every ingredient on that list and not stumble.  There is no vague things like “spices”, “artificial and natural flavors”, and most importantly no “and/or” when referring to three different kinds of oils.  These fries are also Gluten and Wheat Free, No Preservatives, No Corn Syrup, No Transfats, and No Hydrogenated oils.

Yes you read that right!

So I bought them and brought them home.  I tucked them away into the pantry saving them for just the perfect moment.  That perfect moment came during last week’s vacation!

Here they are in all their glory.  I poured out a little bowl and smelled them to see exactly what I was getting into.  They smelled like cheddar fries and now it was time for the taste test.

I tried one and then another immediately afterwards.  Scott asked me how they were at which time I yelled, “HOLY CRAP** Scott!  These are AWESOME!!!”

**Please note that I most likely did not say, “HOLY CRAP” but actually said another four letter word beginning with F.  OHC tries to keep it semi-clean up in here.

I demanded that he come into the kitchen STAT and try some out for himself.  He did and he also loves them.  He asked for another small little bowl of goodness.

They are seasoned well and leave your fingers delightfully cheesy.

These “fries” are also baked and not fried in any way scoring even more bonus points.  They are a great sometimes snack and would be great to put out at a party.  They are light and crispy with a nice cheesy taste.  They won’t weight your tum or your healthy conscious down at all.

Snikiddy makes lots of other products as well, so please check out their site!  They can also be found on Twitter and Facebook.  If you like cheese fries or cheesy puff type snacks, definitely give these snacks a try.  They are tasty and the ingredient list is sound!

Disclaimer: I bought these fries on my own but with Scott’s credit card.  Don’t worry, he was standing right there.  The review is my honest opinion.
