Review: Rogue Beer Mocha Porter

I was going to start this review off with a little song.  I was going to share some lyrics that involved drinking a 40 and hanging out with my pistol fo’ shizzle.  Or you know, something like that.  But rap is not something I’ve very intimate with so I had some trouble finding appropriate lyrics.  Oh sure, I like some stuff here and there but on the whole, rap isn’t really my style.

I just talk the shiz, I don’t listen to it.  So, my friends, you are going to have to make it through this post sans awesome rap lyrics and instead read about my newest dark lover.

I’m going to assume you are alright with this change in direction and proceed with my story.

The first time I had Rogue beer was last November when I was in San Francisco for The Foodbuzz Festival.  It was an afternoon of tasting and people were talking about how fantastic the chocolate stout was.  We all know how much I am in love with the dark side and we definitely should know how much I love me some chocolate stout.  Please see links if you need a refresher.  Basically I like my beer how I like my men, with some color.  That might be easier for you to remember.

Anyway, back on track, I walked over to the Rogue booth to get some chocolate stout.  At that point in time I was a little underwhelmed.  It was late in the afternoon and I was not in a beer mood. I was about to head into a wine tasting so I was limiting in alcohol intake at that point and the beer was a little on the too cold side.  Sadly I ended up tossing it and headed over to the wine tasting.

But Rogue never left my mind and I was determined to try them again.  You see, they sort of won me over with their beer names and because Morimoto has his own beer! Morimoto happens to be my fave Iron Chef, so Morimoto plus witty beer names?

You have me Rogue! You totally have me!

Recently, Scott and I were at the new and improved Kroger not far from home and as we were looking at the beer selection I noticed they had a good variety of Rogue on hand.  You could purchase single bottles which are very similar to a 40 in size. This caused me to giggle and make really inappropriate comments to Scott.  That’s how I roll gang.

Word.

There were a few that caught our attention, but this guy over here ended up being the winner:  Rogue Mocha Porter.

Chocolate? Awesome!

Porter? GIMME ME!

We brought Mr. Luscious over here home and introduced him to our causal lifestyle.  Come play with Scotty and Andie Mr. Luscious!

As you can see from the picture this is a great dark porter.  It pours thick and the head sticks around for several minutes, which to me indicates a lot of things but most notably that this should be a good tasting beer.

I prefer my porters to be a bit warm, so I let it sit for a few minutes while I read the ingredients.  I’m not sure if you can read what is there, but one ingredient is, “Free Range Coastal Water”.  Do we not love them?

Good thing it was time to drink at this point!

This beer was fantastic!  It was very smooth with the light bitter finish of your typical porter.  The chocolate was definitely there and came though at the very end.  It was like you just finished eating a square of really good quality dark chocolate.  That sort of dry chocolate taste that comes with dark chocolate?  That is what I’m talking about.

The upside was that we had almost 40 ounces to share! The downside is that we didn’t buy more.  Boo shame on us!

I have had other beers that talk about being made with chocolate or having chocolate notes, but this beer truly delivers on that claim.  If you enjoy the dark side of beers, definitely give Rogue a look and try.

While in San Francisco, Lori and I did swing by the Rogue Pub one afternoon to check it out.  Sadly we didn’t stay because neither of us were hungry or thirsty but now I’m sort of regretting that decision.  It’s always Beer O’Clock somewhere, right?  Oh well, Rogue and I will definitely have a date the next time I’m in the area.  In the meantime, I’ll have to enjoy my 40s at home.

Get you some Rogue already!  And if you try it, let me know all about it!

    • Look at all my girls coming out of the woodwork and joining the beer love! Awesome!
Scott, I’m definitely going to get the chocolate stout again and give it a try. Stouts are my very favorite style of beer!
Lori, We definitely must go back! :D
Sebbie, Thanks so much for your comment! I love knowing a little bit history behind the brews and how they are made.

  1. Isn’t the new beer section at Kroger amazing? I’m dying to “make my own sixpack” next time I go :)

Thanks for the review, you might just convince me to join the “dark side”

  2. I think the first time I really tried Rogue was out in SF too. I loved that chocolate stout. I do agree that you have to be in the mood to drink it though. So heavy and filling, but delicious. I too, regret the decision that we skipped over that place. Just means we gotta go back! :)

  3. Thanks for the shout out to Rogue Ales! Mocha Porter is roasted to the flavor of chocolate, but the Chocolate Stout has real bittersweet chocolate added to the base beer, which is Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout.

The new Chatoe series release is Dirtoir Black Lager which has notes of chocolate from the dark roasted barley (as does the Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale). Both are lighter bodied beers, with lots of flavor and a nice balance of hops & malts. Rogue Ales has a hop and barley farm in Oregon — the Chatoe series uses our Grown Your Own ingredients.

Check out my blog, http://www.RogueChocolateStout.com — being the face on the bottle, I post recipes, reviews, news, events where its being poured, etc!
