June 19th, 2009: My precious

Hi gang and Happy Friday!  I am glad to see the end of this very long and tiring week, I can assure you.  I’m also looking forward to a relaxing evening and weekend with my two boys.

This morning I woke up before my alarm went off to the sounds of some serious thunder and flashes of intense lightening.  Oh my!  I thought it probably would be best if I didn’t run in that.  I did get up and get Rocky taken care of because it wasn’t raining yet.  If I can avoid taking him out in a monsoon, I will gladly choose that option always.

He came back inside just as the major downpour started.  After a brief discussion of options, returning to bed sounded the most appealing so that’s what we did.  And I slept till after 9am.  Holy cow!  I’m bummed that I didn’t get a run in this morning but I also realize that my bod needed the rest after such an intense week.  I was hungry when I came downstairs but due to the lateness of the morning only wanted something light to eat.

June 18th, 2009: More seafood

Hi guys!  Thank you all for the congrats about our test. :D  We’re still pretty stoked about it on this end and “celebrating”.  Last night I got a bit munchie and I knew that Scott wouldn’t be ready for dinner because he had a bigger lunch than I did so I pulled out a new snack.

Medijool date

Finally saw some medjool dates at WF.  Dang those mofos are expensive.  I picked the cheapest container I could find and it was still over $5.  I had two bites and was done.  I’m sorry food bloggers but I do not like the medjool dates.  There I said it.  They are like a sugar bomb and way too sweet for this sister right here.  I felt like I was eating liquid sugar.  Scott tried a bite even though he doesn’t dig on dates really and said it was okay but he’s not looking to chow down on some.

So what am I to do with the other $5 dollar dates I have sitting in the fridge?

June 18th, 2009: Black looks good on me

Hi gang!  Yesterday was one super crazy day and I’m so relieved that I survived it and it’s over.  Plus I can finally talk about it!

Scott and I tested and received our black belts yesterday in SF.  Hooray!!  Even if you don’t train in a martial art, I’m sure you can understand the physical and mental preparation that goes in to taking such a test.  That was all that was on my mind.  I was nervous and stressed out about it.  The closer it got to test time the more it occupied all of my brain.   Scott and I practiced a lot for this test.  I mean, A LOT.  And despite the fact that it is SF, this test involved no sticks. :p  It was all takedowns and throws with 8 forms to know as well.

My body has been a mess because taking falls over and over again is killer.  Especially on my back.  OY!

June 17th, 2009: Poo-poo

Hi guys!  I would love to start this post off telling you about my awesome sleep I had last night because I was in bed by 10pm. But alas, that is not the case.  I couldn’t shut my brain off and if I wasn’t thinking about things I have to do today then I was dreaming about them. Ugh!  I got up around 7:30 and headed downstairs for some much needed coffee and evil creamer.

Mug of coffee

No run this morning because I just don’t have time today.  Very sad. :(  I worked on posts while sipping on coffee.  If you haven’t seen it yet, this month’s Feet on the Street feature is up and it’s Heather!  Check it out! :D

I headed up to shower and wake up Scotty-loves.  Then I made a light and quick breakfast.

Yogurt, granola and frozen fruit

I’m stressed out and my stomach is in knots so a heavy fiberific breakfast would not have been a wise choice.  I had some granola and yogurt with cranberries and frozen raspberries.

Feet on the Street: Heather

Heather of HangrypantsNo review this week gang because I’ve got too much to do and wouldn’t be able to provide the kind of review that you all have come to love. :D  So I bring you June’s Feet on the Street Feature and this month it’s Heather from Hangrypants!! I first stumbled across Heather’s blog because of a comment she left elsewhere.  I hovered my curser over her name so the title of her blog would show up and instantly I was hooked.  I totally knew what Hangry meant because we have all been there.  And Pants?  Scott and I add pants on to everything!  “I’m chilly pants today!” for example.  Loved it and had to see what was going on.  Heather shares her blog with her love Mark, please check it out!

1. You mentioned before that you started running during law school to sort of help break up all the sitting and studying you were doing.  Did you find that along with moving and exercising, it provided you with some alone time for thoughts and reflection, allowing your mind to think about life instead of law?

Oh definitely! Law school is an intense place and I needed something to take me away from there. I chose yoga and running! Sometimes I would go to the on campus gym and run in between classes. A little running before Contracts is the best!
2. Did running come easy to you or did you start off slow and gradually increase your mileage?

Running definitely did not come easy to me. I hated running when I was little and used to tell my gym teacher I was going to have an asthma attack to get out of running laps. I actually did have asthma, but it wasn’t exercise induced. Anyway, the first time I ran on a treadmill was for a grand total of 10 minutes. I worked up to 3 miles and stuck to that for awhile. Then I started playing games on the treadmill and pushing myself. Over time I moved from 3, to 4, then 5, 6 and 7 miles. I knew I could always do just one more mile.
Heather's Running Shoes
3. Talk to me about your shoes!  What brand are they and what type (be specific, are they neutral shoes, stability shoes, for example)?
I am an Asics girl! I’ve had three versions of Asics Gel Cumulus sneakers in a row! Before I researched sneakers I wore whatever was cute and cheap, but then I read an article in Runner’s World about specific types of sneakers for specific types of needs. At the time I was wearing these Nike Free 5.0 sneakers, which were designed to stimulate running barefoot – they were very thin and you didn’t wear socks. I liked them, but they stunk and I wasn’t convinced they were good for the long term. So, I paid attention to my own sneakers and my feet and that’s how I found these. They are pretty neutral and very cushioning. I love how soft and light they are when you first get them!
4. How did you find these shoes?  Did you purchase them from a running store, did someone help you pick them out?
I would love to go to a running store and have my running analyzed for specific shoes. Hopefully, I will do that soon! But for now, I pick ‘em out myself. I loved my first pair of Cumulus sneakers so much, that I haven’t strayed in several years.
5. You just ran your first half this month, tell me a little bit about why you decided to run a half and your training for it.  Did you have a schedule made personally for you or did you research and create one yourself?
Yes I did!! Well, I was at a Superbowl party and this girl I went to law school with was talking about running a half in early May. She was not a runner at all and was completely starting from scratch. I knew if she could do it, I could. I am not sure if she ever did hers, but with support and inspiration from many other bloggers, I did mine!!!!  As for training programs, I asked for help from the blogging community, researched online and created my own based on the Hal Higdon Intermediate Half Marathon Training Program. I loved having a schedule. It made me feel so bad a**.
6. Now that race season is in full swing on the East Coast and you’ve got a half under your belt, are you looking to race more this year?  Any new goals that you are pondering and can discuss?
Trying to get the marathon scoop are ya? I have pondered a full marathon, but I think I am going to try to a couple more of the NYRR half marathons in Queens and Staten Island in the fall before I commit to a full.
7. Let’s talk gear, what are some of Heather’s essentials for running?  This can be anything from specific socks to a HRM to headbands.  Things that you don’t run without.
I wish I had better equipment, but I’ve never invested a lot of money in workout clothes and equipment. I have my trusty sneakers. I wear Gap ankle socks, sports bras and cotton ribbed tanks. Well, I wore ribbed tanks until I realized I needed some sweat wicking shirts, which I picked up at Target. I like to wear a hat or head band when running because I am very sweaty and it gets in my eyes. I have a simple Polar F4 HRM, which is not fancy by any means, but was crucial to me when training. I used it on a treadmill at first to check my average HR and calories burned/mile. Then when I went outside, I could pace myself and see how far I’d gone.
8. What’s your favorite color and do you try to get running gear in that color?

My favorite color is yellow, but I don’t have any yellow workout gear! I tend to have a lot of navy and pink. I also have a fabulous white cotton tank with a pink flamingo on it though!
9. You’re headed out for a long run, if you listen to music, what’s going to be on that playlist.

I have an eclectic playlist. I love whatever pop/hip hop is on the radio at the time, like right now I like Day ‘N’ Night (Kid Cudi) and Boom Boom Pow (Black Eyed Peas). But I also like songs that probably aren’t traditional running songs, like Viva La Vida (Coldplay), Better In Time (Leona Lewis) and You Found Me (The Fray) and I always love my angry rock Metallica. I tend to add songs to the playlist rather than replacing them.
Thanks Heather!  Don’t forget to head over to Heather’s website and say hello!

June 16th, 2009: It’s been a long day

Hi guys!  We have to go clear back to Monday night to take a look at some eats. :O  I know!

Frozen grapes and two prunes

I had two prunes and some frozen grapes because I was a little munchie after SF class that night.  Then I crashed in bed and was asleep by 10:30pm!  Score!

I woke up early Tuesday to bust out my run.  And I ran 3.5 miles with no issues.  Hooray!! This is my first 3.5er in over a month which just blows my mind when I think about it.  But I was so happy to knock that out.  For sure I can do that race next month!  Then I ran Rocky out for his walk and the weather was super cool which sort of surprised me.

Chocolate soymilk

Two glasses of CS later and I hit the shower.  Then it was time for easy breakfast.

Granola and yogurt with coffee

Yogurt and granola! With some blackberries, cranberries, and frozen raspberries.  The granola was chocolate because that’s all we have at the house.  I should just make my own instead of buying some more.  Almond milk in the coffee yesterday, it was just okay.  Not too creamy or sweet.

Interruptius

Hi gang!  I will bring you all of today’s eats tomorrow or at least try! :D  I’m terribly sorry about this interruptius in my blog schedule but this week at the HQ is with the crazy.  Things should ease up a little by Thursday.  I’m hoping!  Plus my mind is elsewhere and I wouldn’t make for much company at the moment.  I will share soon!  Just something that is taking all of my time and focus right now. :D

Whew! It’s wiping me out and I’m already looking forward to sleep!  Chat tomorrow guys!

Tuesday Tip: Freeze grapes for a healthy snack

Frozen delicacy

Frozen delicacy

It’s summer time at the HQ and along with all the fresh fruit in season, summer also means cool treats.  One of my very favorite cool treats is frozen grapes which is something I just got turned on to last summer.

I love grapes but they always seemed to spoil faster than I could eat them.  This was frustrating to me because I hate throwing out food and because fresh produce isn’t cheap.  Then I came across a blog (I can’t remember which one!) where frozen grapes made frequent appearances.

Genius idea!

And I started freezing my grapes and haven’t looked back.  I wash the grapes and pull them off the stem, toss them in a freezer bag and store the bag in the freezer.  Whenever I want a snack, I dump some out in a bowl and ta-da, frozen healthy treat for a hot summer day.

They also last forever this way and there’s no more worrying about them spoiling before I have a chance to eat them.  To me, they taste like a fruit sorbet with a bit of a chew because of the grape skin.  This is easily, hands-down, one of my favorite snacks.  You can even plop some in a drink to help keep it cool instead of ice.

June 15th, 2009: Bubble busted

Hi gang!  Last night there was this:

Red wine panettone

Oh yeah!  There’s currently a 1/2 piece of panettone left of my stash and I’m thinking of killing that tonight.  That way my stash is gone and outta here.  I’ll be pining for more till the holiday season. BTW, the plate is for both of us and the slices are then made into bite-sized pieces.   That way it looks like more and takes longer to eat.

While snacking Scott and I watched Wanted.  Holy schnikes this was one of the worst movies we’ve seen in a long time.  I don’t even know how we managed to watch the whole thing because within the first 10 minutes both of us were discussing just turning it off.  Ugh there was 2 hours of our life gone.  Then we finished the last hour of 24 which, what?  It was totally anticlimactic which leaves everyone frustrated and annoyed.  There was too much Kim although thank goodness she was properly dressed and not in boobtastic outfits.  But still: Kim; make her go away.  And it seemed like it was going to continue into next season.  So that means more Renee and more Janice.  Ew.  Hey I like Janeane G. as much as the next person but there’s only so much fake pouty lips and hair-parted-straight-down-the-middle I can take before I get a little cranky.  I totally called Tony’s plan ages ago and they should have let him kill that guy.  I guess my point is, the ending didn’t seem like an ending and left me a little confused and blah.

June 14th, 2009: And so it begins

Hi lovies!  I got up not long after 7am this morning and by the time I was done taking care of Rocks it was going on 7:30.  This made me pause and decide what to do.  Scott and I had a bunch of things to get done today plus I needed to get some blog posts up and this made me doubt if I could squeeze a run in. Add on that all day today we were going to do some SF training today with a few other people and I just wasn’t sure if I could fit everything in.  I did eat 1/2 a peppermint stick Luna while deciding on what to do.  Finally I just poured some coffee resigned to the fact that running today wasn’t going to happen.

Mug of coffee

I checked mail and got my two posts up and finished.  It was 9am by this point and I thought, WTH, I’m going to run.  And the truth is that I couldn’t take sitting in the house any longer.
