June 8th, 2009: Life Changes

Hi gang!  Save for one moment when I was a little hot, I had the best sleep last night.  YaY!  And I know it probably sounds odd but most times I love Mondays.  Mondays are my rest and work days.  Rest meaning, other than SF class in the evening, I don’t do any exercise.  And work because I get things planned out for the blog.

I tried something new with my coffee this morning.

I used vanilla almond milk instead of creamer.  It was just okay.  Didn’t really make the coffee any sweeter or creamier, so I guess that won’t really be an option for a creamer substitute.  Quest continues!  I read some blogs and then got Scott up and made some breakfast.

Oaty oats!  I have been back in an oatmeal mood lately but this does not mean that oatbran is getting kicked to the curb.  Oats with a twist, I added in some chocolate protein powder today.  It smelled so yummy, just like chocolate NesQuik!  Gave some nice flavor and depth to the oats without being overpowering.  Super basic mix-ins today, cranberries and pecans.  I also had another small mug of coffee that I did not finish and used regular creamer for that.

After breakfast I got dressed and took Rocky out for his walk while there was a break in the rain. It was so humid outside, we were swimming instead of walking.  It also made for a short walk because yuck, it was too muggy.

Back home, I got laundry started and did some blog stuff. Eventually I got hungry and headed into the kitchen to make lunch.  Salad here I come!

Salad

  • Mixed greens
  • Shredded beet, golden beet, and parsnip
  • Raisins
  • Crumbled turkey bacon
  • Cucumber
  • Pecans

Drizzled with balsamic, honey, and a bit of olive oil.

  • Splash of POM
  • 1C of unsweetened cranberry juice
  • 1C water
  • Small bunch of kale
  • Small bunch of spinach
  • 1 carrot
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen pineapple
  • Frozen mango

There was also some crackers and garlic hummus on the side.  Fabbo lunch!  There was a kitchen incident today!  As I was shredding the beet, it caught and my hand slipped causing me to shred up my right thumb.  Booo!  And we really didn’t need any extra iron or protein in our salad but ohs wells, sometimes it’s not always about what we want or need I guess.  Thank goodness for liquid bandage!  It stings like a mofo when applied but it works like a charm.  I hate band-aids, they always fall off and make me feel very restricted in movement.  While liquid bandage reveals my scapes and cuts in all their glory, they are protected and I can move around!

Life Changes

Lots of thinking has been going on around the HQ lately in terms of where I see my life going and how to achieve that.  I work from home and do verbatim transcription.  However with the recession, transcription is not an extra that companies want to pay for right now.  And that’s understandable.  As much as I love blogging, it doesn’t pay the bills.  I’ve thought about things I would like to do and have come up with two things:

1. I would love to do freelance writing work, either writing product reviews, lifestyle articles, or things along those lines.  I have no idea how to get in that line of work.

2. Working with athletes.  Having dealt with injuries myself (and more to come, I’m sure), I realize how important it is to have people who are dedicated to understanding athletes and keeping them healthy.  As an athlete myself, it’s extremely important to me that the person working with me is also an athlete.  I feel more of a connection with them because they can fully comprehend how an athlete’s mind works.  You can’t tell an athlete that they have to stop doing something.  That’s like telling a chef to stop cooking if they have an injury, it just doesn’t work.  In order to do physical therapy though that would require me to go back to school.  For the record, I’ve been out of college for 10 years.  Huge culture shock if I went back! :p  But before I jump in with both feet and consider all of that, I probably should get some experience first just to make sure I want to do physical therapy.  And again I have no idea how to go about that.

So here I am with lots of things swirling around in my head.  I know that I love working from home and am happiest that way.  My transcription business has been running for four years. I’m very self-motivated, a hard worker, and very organized.  I’ve got some mad skillz, yo. ;)  If I were to get a gig doing therapy and love it, my ultimate goal would be to someday open my own business in conjunction with a registered dietitian to provide athletes with all kinds of support.  But that is totally looking at the big picture.  Things to think about for sure.

  1. I too am on the quest for a good creamer substitute. My faves so far have been: SILK creamer OR liquid Stevia (today I had chocolate raspberry) + unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

    For my on the side writing gig, my editor contacted me, but I would just find a site that does the sort of thing you want to, and get in touch with them to see if they can use (aka PAY) you!

  2. I know that craiglist has a lot of stuff for freelancing and writing pop up on the weekly basis, you should check it out!

  3. Actually, I’m more jealous of your skinny arms :) I think that for the writing stuff, you may have to get your foot in the door by offering to do it for free. On the athletic side, what about becoming a trainer?
